Year 5 had a fantastic time during their PSHE lesson all about social media and online safety. We began by exploring the question, “Why do people use social media?” Children were given a range of answers from a survey and worked in teams to rank what they thought the top five responses would be — just like the game Family Fortunes! This sparked lots of thoughtful discussion and debate about communication, entertainment and staying connected with others.
Later in the lesson, the children became designers and created their own social media platform called Stay Safe, aimed at children aged 13–15 with online safety at its heart. They produced some incredibly creative ideas, including AI scanners to detect inappropriate content, facial recognition technology to prevent underage users from creating accounts, and built-in reporting systems to keep users safe online.
